Free Transit for All Lynwood Students Returns through Metro GoPass Program

Exploring the Los Angeles region will be even easier for Lynwood Unified students this school year, thanks to a renewed partnership with LA County Metro that will allow all K-12 Lynwood students to enjoy free public transportation for the second year in a row.

Lynwood Unified is rejoining the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s (Metro) Fareless System Initiative and GoPass program, which provides students with a pre-loaded Metro TAP card for unlimited rides across the Metro system for an entire year. The program comes at no cost to the District, as Warehouse Shoe Sale (WSS) will cover the full cost.

During the 2024-25 school year, the GoPass served approximately 11,000 Lynwood Unified students, who took more than 42,000 rides between July 2024 and May 2025. This year, the program is expected to support about 10,000 students.

“We are incredibly grateful to WSS for continuing to support the GoPass program, which plays a vital role in ensuring that transportation is never a barrier to education for our students,” Superintendent Patrick Gittisriboongul, Ed.D., said. “With free access to public transit, our students have greater opportunities to attend school consistently, participate in enrichment programs, and connect with resources throughout the region.”

The GoPass Tap cards and activation codes are now available for pick-up at all Lynwood Unified schools, enabling students to travel to school, extracurricular activities and work without worrying about fares. Students may activate their cards online, by calling 866.TAPTOGO or by using a virtual TAP card through the TAP LA App.

Launched in October 2021, the Metro program aims to inspire a new generation of transit riders. With a GoPass, students receive free access to all Metro Bus, Metro Rapid, Metro Liner, and Metro Rail services. Additional participating transit systems include:

  • City of Commerce Transit
  • Culver City Bus
  • Foothill Transit
  • Gardena Transit (GTrans)
  • LA County Shuttles
  • LADOT Dash
  • Lynwood Trolley Breeze
  • Long Beach Transit
  • Montebello Bus
  • Norwalk Transit
  • Pasadena Transit
  • Santa Monica Big Blue Bus
  • Torrance Transit

The GoPass is a flexible resource that empowers students to explore new communities and broaden their access to ideas, experiences, and opportunities for success. Students ages 13 and older can register independently, while those under 13 will need a parent or guardian to activate their cards.
