Lynwood Unified Early Childhood Education Center Unveils New Vibrant Green Space

Lynwood Unified community members came together on October 17 to celebrate a new Green School Yard at the Early Childhood Education (ECE) center at Lindbergh Elementary School with a tree-planting ceremony, marking the first phase of the Lynwood Greening Initiative to transform outdoor spaces into vibrant, sustainable environments for students.

Developed with SLA Inc., SALT Landscape Architects, and TreePeople, the nearly $2 million project, funded by CAL FIRE Green Schoolyards grants, will revamp 10 district sites, highlighting Lynwood Unified’s commitment to environmental stewardship and hands-on learning.

“This investment increases our green spaces, outdoor learning areas and overall beautification of our environment for our youngest learners,” Elementary Education Coordinator Courtney Gillette said. “We would like to express our deep gratitude and appreciation for all of our community partners for the time, effort and care that went into updating the site.”

Spearheaded by SLA President and Lynwood Unified alumnus Jessie Salazar, the project replaced more than 10,000 square feet of asphalt with 40 shade trees, 400 native plants, and new outdoor classrooms, reading gardens, and gathering spaces.

By 2028, all 10 campuses – including Firebaugh High, Hosler Middle and eight elementary and ECE sites – will feature sustainable landscapes, outdoor learning spaces and irrigation systems that will benefit generations of students.

Lynwood Unified continues to set a standard for sustainable, hands-on learning environments that foster student well-being and environmental responsibility. The District is committed to enriching education by providing students with experiences that inspire creativity, curiosity and a lifelong connection to the natural world.
