District Mission
The mission of the Lynwood Unified School District is to prepare every student for success in college and career as a responsible citizen in a global society by guaranteeing equity and access to meaningful learning activities relevant to the 21st Century. A strong education program impacts all students. Therefore, LUSD supports all efforts to differentiate instruction for students in order that they may all achieve their potential.
Program Description
Lynwood Unified School District clusters GATE identified students tin the Intellectual Abilities category in grades 4-8 as suggested by the California Education Code. Students in K-2 are pre-identified to help ensure they obtain additional differentiated opportunities based on their perceived strengths. Using a differentiated curriculum to meet the needs of students, identified elementary students are clustered in groups of 5 to 8 in each classroom. Schools that have less than five students per grade will clustered as well. Teachers servicing GATE identified students are provided with training to meet the needs of their students. In 2012 LUSD contracted with USC's Dr. Sandra Kaplan, co-author of California's GATE plan to provide training for teachers at every elementary and middle school.
IDENTIFICATION
Who May Test and When
Lynwood Unified School District now offers every student the opportunity to be tested at least once for GATE identification beginning in the third grade. Once students are identified as gifted, the formal clustering begins in the fourth grade.
The testing window in LUSD begins in November and continues through March, please contact your school to learn when it will be made available to students.
