Steps to Retirement for CalPERS Members
Throughout Your Career:
-
Regularly review your CalPERS service credit to ensure it is accurate.
-
Each time you receive a service credit statement, check for errors. If you believe there is a discrepancy, submit a copy of the statement along with a brief explanation to the Human Resources Department.
-
Visit the CalPERS website at www.calpers.ca.gov for general information about your retirement benefits.
At Least 5 Years Before Retirement:
-
Attend a CalPERS Retirement Seminar to become familiar with your options and the retirement process.
At Least 6 Months Before Retirement:
-
Confirm your creditable years of service with the District to determine your eligibility for post-retirement health benefits. Classified employees should contact the Benefits/Payroll Department at (310) 886-1600, Ext. 8282.
-
Discuss your benefits options with the Benefits/Payroll Department at the same number above.
-
Schedule an appointment with a CalPERS counselor to review your retirement options. You can make an appointment by calling the CalPERS Regional Call Center at (888) 225-7377 or by visiting www.calpers.ca.gov.
At Least 3 Months Before Retirement:
-
Notify your site supervisor of your intent to retire.
-
Schedule an appointment with the Benefits and Payroll Manager to determine your eligibility for health benefits after retirement.
-
Contact the Benefits/Payroll Department at (310) 886-1600, Ext. 8282 to set up the appointment and receive the benefit package.
-
Complete the District’s Retirement/Resignation Form and review it with your Principal or Supervisor. Submit the completed form to Human Resources via school mail or email it to lyn_hr@mylusd.org.
Determining Your Retirement Date:
-
Your district retirement date must be on or after your last day in paid status (e.g., work, vacation, sick leave).
-
Your CalPERS retirement date must follow your district retirement date.
Example:
-
"Retirement Date" – 06/17/XX
-
CalPERS Form: "Last Day of Paid Employment" – 06/16/XX
-
District Retirement Form: "Retirement Date" – 06/16/XX
Final Steps Before Retirement:
Certification of Retirement and Sick Leave Reporting
Upon receiving a Notice of Placement on Retirement Roll from CalPERS, the District will certify your retirement date and report your unused sick leave balance to CalPERS for service credit purposes.
Important: Your District retirement date must be within 120 days of your CalPERS retirement date. If it is not, you will not be eligible to convert unused sick leave toward service credit.
Retirement Forms Submission
-
Submit all completed forms from the retirement packet directly to CalPERS.
-
If you or your eligible spouse/domestic partner is 65 or older at the time of retirement, you must enroll in Medicare Parts A & B.
