Facilities Optimization

Planning for the Future of Lynwood Schools

Lynwood Unified is committed to creating high-quality, equitable learning environments for every student. As we navigate declining enrollment and rising facility maintenance costs, we have launched a Facilities Optimization process to ensure our resources are aligned to support the strongest possible educational outcomes for our students.

In Fall 2025, a committee of parents, staff, and administrators examined enrollment trends, facility conditions, and program impacts across five meetings. Their recommendations — closing three elementary schools and relocating Hosler Middle School — were presented to the Board of Education on November 13, 2025.

On December 11, 2025, the Board approved a resolution extending the Facilities Optimization and community engagement process for an additional year and authorizing the future relocation of Hosler Middle School to the Bullis Campus.

Why Lynwood Unified is Reviewing Its Schools and Facilities

Our student population has changed drastically over the last decade — a trend seen across Los Angeles County and California.

  • Lynwood Unified has declined by nearly 4,000 students over the last 10 years due to declining birth rates.

  • We expect enrollment to drop by more than 2,000 additional students by 2028.

  • Our schools were built to serve more than 16,000 students, but we currently have capacity for about 5,000 more students than are enrolled today.

This means we have extra space and resources that are not being used as effectively as they could be. This moment gives us an important opportunity to realign our schools, programs, and resources so they better support student success — now and in the future.

What is Facilities Optimization?

Facilities Optimization is the process of reviewing how our school buildings and campuses are used, evaluating current and projected enrollment, and determining the best way to invest in our facilities to:

  • Enhance academic offerings,

  • Support students, and

  • Ensure long-term sustainability.

This work may lead to recommendations such as:

  • Adjusting school boundaries

  • Consolidating under-enrolled campuses

  • Prioritizing investments in modern, well-equipped learning spaces

How This Could Help Students

Reconfiguration could help Lynwood Unified:

  • Reduce the number of combination (split-grade) classes

  • Balance class sizes across campuses

  • Expand access to enrichment programs, after-school activities, and specialized instruction

  • Increase collaboration among teachers

  • Make more effective use of resources

  • Create learning spaces that are better equipped to meet the needs of students at every level

“We are re-envisioning how our schools can be structured to offer more opportunity, more support and more innovation for our students — elevating the educational experience for years to come.”
- Gretchen Janson, Ed.D., Assistant Superintendent of Business and Fiscal Services
