Dual Language Immersion

At Lynwood Unified School District, we believe that learning two languages is a gift that lasts a lifetime — and it’s never too early to start. Our Dual Language Immersion (DLI) Program is designed to give students the tools they need to thrive academically, socially, and professionally in a global society.

Since 2014, our DLI program has flourished at Will Rogers Elementary School, and in fall 2024, we proudly expanded to Mark Twain Elementary School, offering more families the chance to begin their child’s bilingual journey in Kindergarten.

What is DLI?

LUSD’s 90/10 Dual Immersion model begins with instruction primarily in Spanish (90%) and gradually balances to 50/50 with English by upper grades. Language is not taught in isolation — students learn core academic subjects in Spanish first, with English gradually introduced as they advance. The goal? True fluency, biliteracy, and bicultural understanding.

You Don’t Need to Speak Spanish!

One of the most exciting parts of DLI is that families do not need to be native Spanish speakers to join the program. Students support one another, and together with our dedicated teachers, they grow as bilingual, biliterate, and bicultural learners. Teachers are specially trained to support every child’s language development and academic success.

Building Stronger Families and Communities

Our DLI program doesn’t just benefit students — it empowers families. Children bring home communication skills that strengthen bonds with Spanish-speaking relatives, open doors for future careers, and connect generations. Whether it’s helping a grandparent speak with their grandchild or preparing for a global career, DLI students are making a difference at home and in the world.
