Lynwood Job Opportunity for Youth (LJOY)
Empowering Futures Through Education and Employment
The Lynwood Job Opportunity for Youth (LJOY) Program empowers at-promise and McKinney-Vento students with meaningful work experiences that inspire personal and professional growth.
This Golden Bell Award-winning program equips foster youth, unhoused students, and others navigating personal hardships with the skills they need to succeed in the 21st-century workforce.
Students build character, explore career pathways, strengthen their soft skills and gain a clear understanding of the responsibilities that come with employment. By reducing financial pressure and creating a stable, encouraging environment, students can stay focused on their academic and personal goals.
“Some of our most vulnerable students struggle with food and housing insecurities, but we are committed to being the lifeline that empowers them to know they can still graduate — and we’re going to help them get there.”
– Dr. Maribel Martinez, Director of Student Services and LJOY Program Administrator
About the Program
Students are employed by the District for up to 20 hours per week throughout the school year and are matched with meaningful job placements that include:
-
Classroom and instructional support
-
Office and clerical assistance
-
Custodial and facilities support
-
Tutoring and enrichment programs
Alongside their work, students receive specialized mentorship and guidance to manage their time effectively, navigate challenges, and develop skills for long-term success.
“I work with kids, helping them with their homework and organizing events – it’s awesome to be with them. This program has inspired me to pursue a career in teaching, and I want to thank Lynwood Unified for showing us that we can be successful regardless of our circumstances.”
– Jessica Soto, LJOY student
