Board of Education Meeting Highlights 04.22.21

IN-PERSON MEETING
The meeting was a limited in-person gathering for the Board of Education and District leaders but remained closed to the public in accordance with safe social distancing practices. The public utilized teleconferencing and was also streamed to Facebook Live. Public comment was available through email and voice recording prior to the meeting. SCHOOL REOPEN
The District’s elementary schools have successfully reopened their doors for optional in-person instruction and LUSD will begin welcoming back secondary students on May 3. Dr. Robert Gilchick, of the LA County Department of Public Health, joined Superintendent Gudiel Crosthwaite for a Facebook LIVE discussion on April 22 about safely reopening schools. Gilchick confirmed that all trends are moving in a positive direction. You can view the discussion HERE.


STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT PLANS AND FAMILY ENGAGEMENT POLICY

Dr. Shawna Dinkins, Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services, provided a presentation on school plans to boost achievement and community engagement. Plans include:
  • Analyzing student data
  • Measuring effectiveness of current strategies
  • Identifying achievement goals
  • Defining timelines
  • Recommending Plan to the Board
  • Implement the plan
  • Monitor Results
The District is striving to align Board of Education priorities, plans for student success, and LCAP goals. LUSD will continue to seek community input through its English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC) and School Site Council (SSC).

NUTRITION SERVICES
The District’s Nutrition Services staff were publicly recognized for their vital work in feeding the community. The staff has served pick-up-and-go meals at school sites throughout the pandemic to ensure families have essential needs. The group received special certificates from the Board.

LYNWOOD HIGH SCHOOL RELOCATION UPDATE
The District shared an update on the inspections taking place at Lynwood High School. LUSD is considering all avenues to address the issues that have been discovered through an engineering review.
