Lugo Elementary School Caps Off Latino Heritage Month with ¡Loteria Night!

Schools across Lynwood Unified honored rich Latino traditions and cultural excellence with festive activities, spirit days, and educational opportunities throughout Latino Heritage Month, with Lugo Elementary School capping off the festivities with a Lotería Night on Oct. 20.

Lotería is a traditional game of chance, similar to bingo, and is played with a deck of cards with colorful, cultural icons. It is one of many activities guests had the opportunity to take part in at Lugo’s inaugural event, which was organized by the school’s Cultural and Community adjunct committee.

The event featured a musical performance, traditional food - including pozole, aguas frescas, and churros - as well as fun activities with traditional piñatas. Students participated in an art contest as part of the month-long celebration and the top three winners were acknowledged at the event. Their artwork ranged from colorful drawings to paintings on canvas, and the top winner was fourth-grader Mason Cortez, who submitted a mixed-media piece titled “Everyone is Beautiful.”

Lynwood Unified is proud to recognize the diverse cultures, traditions, and histories of the communities that make up Lynwood and is committed to providing opportunities for students to discover their potential and feel empowered to pursue their passions.
