We celebrated the year and recognized the accomplishments of our students and teachers during the 4th Annual State of the District.

Lopez good morning everyone buenos dias thank you for joining us today cited to be here with you on a Friday morning and by the way it's my birthday so Noah feder place to be so thank you again for joining us for the 4th annual state of the district it's been a tough year but for some communities has been a little harder with that being said let me start by acknowledging our school board starting with our board president please stand to be recognized misses my dad Lopez our vice president who's joining us virtually mr. Alfonso Morales our clerk doctor Alma Karina Castro and joining us virtually mr. Gary Hardy jr. and Mister the real Coronavirus as a district we remain committed to our mission of becoming an urban model School District that ensures that all students fearlessly achieve their potential for us to do this it's critical that we have the right people in place to ensure we can show the slices room having said that I want to also acknowledge our cabinet starting with our assistant superintendent ed services Doctor shayanna Jenkins our assistant superintendent of technology and Innovation on the left in the picture dr. Patrick Geddes standing next to him is our assistant superintendent of Human Resources dr. Brian Lucas and next to dr. Dinkins is RSN superintendent of Business Services mr. Greg from they truly are our Dream Team when I lived in Boston I worked as a paralegal some of you may not know that about me for a nonprofit called Central I learned the importance of the term but I sent them placenta carry so much including emphasizing that even during difficult times we are present Not absent not hiding but front Center taking action and doing our part to make a difference in the comedian last year of course incredible challenges but during these challenges Lynnwood stepped it up Lynnwood was present call Anita these things I want you to stay and join me with same but I sent their sole were Unified School District Food Pantry Mill distribution covid testing contact tracing vaccines for the community communication collaboration with Lynwood City the sheriff's departments are local church and of course with our partners thing together we have Randy Barth president-ceo who we couldn't have done this work without you without your support how we put together was no easy task I am extremely grateful and appreciative of the collaboration the support that we received our employees stepped up they were but I sent they hear you have our campus officer McGee we have teachers from Washington Elementary first group of teachers who came in to support our in-person instruction do we have Miss of Allah from Washington Elementary who helped bring in kids in the spring and of course Audrey gases from mastering home and Lynnwood high school English teacher who was also recognized by assembly speaker Rendon as woman of the year show me the highlights are counselors are teachers who weather in person or virtually came together in creative ways to support our students of course our administrators who are always here any of them who never left sometimes it seemed that some of them were sleeping here and had a different home here as well but they were always here supporting listening under very difficult and challenging situations Christmas quotes English teacher at Hollister middle school and David Washington helping out with the LA Food Bank who are always behind the scene supporting and encouraging and reminding all of us that we're going to get you through this together and even were wearing face masks you can still see the smiles penetrating through right here we are at Chavez Middle School with some of our parent volunteers Reformed Church of LA with Reverend Rubio Greater Emmanuel Temple with the Reverend Stewart and their volunteers who came a weekend and week out to support over 500 families on a weekly basis over 26,000 meals were served during this time and again we're so grateful to the LA Food Bank for supporting these efforts and here's a slide with those numbers but again Lynwood unified helped lead brought people together took action and embraced our Rome families relied and trusted us beyond the academics we provided assistance with food vaccines covid testing and again I want to take another moment check knowledge Lynwood City for their continued support and partnership think together for helping us bring his back in person I want to recognize the sheriff's department because those lines for the food pantry man they were around blocks and our neighbors are community members who never complains because they knew what we were doing I want to again acknowledge our our church has Greater Emmanuel Temple Reformed Church of LA because they never hesitated not once they were always there to provide that much-needed support and I know St John's Well Child and Family Center for bringing vaccines to the Community as early as February of this year which wasn't Disney incredible and of course our parents for entrusting us with their children Beyonce for Super Pollo so thank you so much and as a district we understood when pouring it was to reflect on what we were doing and what we needed to do differently so here's just a quick slide we expanded our devices 13,000 devices to support students and staff but we knew that we had to also do more and so at this point I'd like to invite one of our high school seniors Miss Ida at 9 this to come up to the podium and talk a little bit about her experiences here and then we're going to find good morning board president mrs. Lopez board members District cabinet members and Linwood Community my name is side and Des and I am a senior at Lynnwood High School as well as a student board representative it is an honor to have been chosen to represent Lynnwood High School at the 4th state of the district meeting this Friday October 8th I grew up in the city of Lynwood and previously attended Thurgood Marshall and Cesar Chavez Middle School over the past three years of being at Lynnwood High School I have been involved in many clubs such as National Honor Society avid is be an organization's outside of school such as the American Red Cross the public health Academy with Charles Drew University and UCLA's partnership for Progress health program I have taken advantage of the many resources The Lynwood Unified School District has offered the first being taking AP and honors courses that have better prepare me for what to expect in a college setting I haven't even took a step further and participated in Compton College classes that as of now have helped me taken seven free college courses that I will no longer need to play for in college after I graduate high school at 10 and attending a four-year University while complete my undergraduate degree and apply to medical school My ultimate goal that I plan on Julian is becoming the first pediatrician in my family as a first-generation student from Mexican immigrant parents when the pandemic hit in March a difficult transition for everybody we all experience hardships or know someone who had a difficult time with covid-19 was at its peak personally I lost many family members do to this disease and was even unfortunate enough to live with the disease myself and my family for about a month while having to deal with this awful symptoms of covid-19 I also have to manage attending online classes and completing homework when all I really wanted to do was stay in bed for hours because of the lack of energy that I had one of the Waze app reserved and maintaining my energy through these tough times was by focusing on helping others I became a project under the name of falling which stands for future of low-income communities I wanted to spread awareness to low-income communities regarding health disparities programs family annoying communities are eligible to apply to and provide families with any Community Resources available to them primarily because I know that during these times many people and teenagers had questions and had no idea where to get these answers from how do you spell show me Paige was and Carly is the most prominent source of information I established a social media page where I would inform people with credible and knowledgeable sources of these specific items the transition from the impression instruction with one guy so extremely nervous. at first I personally wasn't sure about coming back to school during the pandemic and I prefer to stay virtual or at least in a hybrid method this year I did not mind being online as I was always fully supported by my teachers would offer tutoring and office hours for all of my classes after school and felt super engage with school activities as a SD another club we're always active on social media platforms and during online classes while my experience there an online school was great many students to deal with hardships and found it extremely difficult to from home somehow to work and attend school due to family issues I know they had siblings in the same room as them while trying to manage their studies as a result the transition back to imprison instruction was beneficial to many students who did not feel comfortable learning at home as we transition on to the middle school campus also known as the original Lynnwood High School campus this year many students expressed their doubts and concerns returning back till middle school campus many were worried that the campus would be too small to accommodate for All Star especially during a pandemic even though many were not pleased with this idea our staff has worked extremely hard to make this campus feel like home again with murals being painted on walls to daily e-mails of our lunch menus for the day Stephen A Wellness Center open where students are able to access free water every day and talk to a nurse for mental and moral support the transition back to campus was one we're not just myself but others surely felt safe as we have officially transition back into an armed clear all in one nights are looking forward to the events that we will be hosting on campus as of now we have had vast participation our football games night rally homecoming dance after school club sales in some activities and our PBIS system students are joining more clubs and being more active with the school now that they feel more included and excited about actually being able to host in person events many students have already expressed their excitement in regard to the events that we have already held and are extremely high. all the other future events that are pending to come after having to deal with an online to imprison transition and a site where translation the castle has provided a new support for their students to feel safe and secure as well as bringing back the spirit that was last for for a year-and-a-half growing up in Lynnwood for the past 17 years I witnessed firsthand how much the community has change many fast food places were removed and in place parts and fitness Trails were built food distribution became extremely popular I helped many families in need with food and personal items that lasted for months I have seen how the community has grown for the greater good and cannot wait to see what it accomplishes 10 years from now while many people from outside of Lynwood csla disadvantaged communities I feel that Lynn what is the strongest Community I know of because of the amount of effort everyone here put together in order to accomplish the greater good regardless of our demographic status race religion or skin color ladies and gentlemen it was a pleasure being go to speak with you all today I hope you all have an amazing rest of your day thank you cider and congratulate cuz I mean look taking multiple college courses struggled virtually started a nonprofit basically to support a raise awareness about the disparities in healthcare start here in kindergarten preschool so maybe fourteen years ago and I'm so glad you mentioned preschool because we're going to talk a little bit about how critical and important that is for committee is like West Side are you inspire me I started here 12 years ago two years behind you and to see you come up here and to share your experiences is Inspire Etta reminds all of us of why we're here and the work that we're doing the progress that we've made and it's yes we've accomplished a lot and we're proud of you and all of your colleagues your peers but we still have a lot of work ahead of us and we can't do it ourselves we need to support of our communities businesses as well as are our parents and students before I continue let me just take a moment to acknowledge from Senator Lena Gonzalez's office Miguel Mejia join us in the back so just to continue with with my presentation at side I mentioned the importance of social media as a school district re-2 car payments every school developed their own social media accounts and some of us are still learning right now have you know do the Facebook lies on my resume and got my Instagram account and my Twitter account and you know so it's something that work realizing that it's a tool to support that communication and how critical it is but we also recognize that not all of our teenagers are on Facebook that's for us older Generations but they're on histogram snap and now we also have Tik-Tok account but again just a little a example of how we've had to Pivot to make sure that we're using the tools available to support our students and our families enter the building capacity of you heard about a labor shortage we've been proactive in these efforts and so we have partnered with Alger Graduate School of Education and launching diversity a partnership with diversity and Leadership so that we can provide community members and our employees opportunities right Diana for a c s e a present in the back we want to provide our employees are community members opportunities for them to continue their education to get internships and to continue developing their skills so that they can promote and ultimately mean in the Lynnwood Community in terms of facilities we've been a little busy so we have you secured entrances for the schools that were built over of almost a hundred years ago in the 1920s Lincoln Washington and Wells I'll have you secured entrances that again emphasized our board's commitment to the safety of our students and staff and on top of everything else we experienced a huge concern and challenge at Lynnwood High School and I won't go through all these bullets here but in June of last year literally tons of concrete collapse we were fortunate that soon as we're not on campus but our board here you can see the images our board immediately took action to further investigate what led to this and what we needed to do to make sure that our students and our staff were safe and we hired an in pending structural engineer we work with the California Department of State DS a division of State architect who came out and communicated with us and we wanted to make sure that we did everything possible because we were not going to compromise the safety of our students like cider or staff and so here's just a quick timeline or some pictures of of the work that was done because we had a Monumental task to move students from The Lynwood high school campus on Imperial to the Lynwood a facility on Bullis and here you see some of that work that was done the progress that was being made and we had a very short timeline and here with us I'm going to invite mrs. Lopez back up to the front to share some of the additional information regarding the work that had to take place at Lynnwood High School and she and I are going to tag teaming in English and in Spanish thank you mister Korea I think I'm about to pull up and get those today almost metal open Pandora and play Ice kwela little high chair Leo pasado Come Aboard centimos casinos India El Mundo Build-A-Bear the only your own Empire and don't speak Malaysian superintendente it's going to be verbatim we were dealing with a pandemic and the anxiety that we had in the community and what we were witnessing and trying to support students and families with a virtual schooling and then we had a collapse at Lynnwood High School and now we had to now the inspector but we had to make sure that we weren't compromising the safety of our students and our staff Wendell Watson Elementary School and ask if I'll board superintendent a little Mexican como se dice pero Vamos a poner Los Angeles High School KOCO Baba Lynwood Middle inertia and momentum estabamos lista para el dia de la pastora so we came together with the superintendent met multiple times and we review different options we had at least six different options one of them being to relocate the students over 1,800 of them from Lynwood High School to their old high school campus which is the formerly of Lynwood Middle School on Bullis and I know there's something else mother okay basically is this is what I said but in this words so when we start meeting with a bond committee and I certainly I apologize because I was she's so hot at the point that one moment. Construction Company Del Tara said no we are going to hire more subcontractors and basically we're like seats and they were working 24/7 3D furnace schedules but it was exciting. high school is in good hands because the rest of the board was all their welcoming back students and again is Sizzler process for us but it's so grateful to our staff who are able to get this done in assistance in helping us bring this to the attention of Governor Newsom because the funds that we are allocated through the community for other projects and much-needed Warframe facilities has now been relocated and allocated to support the move to the Bullis campus as well as making these upgrades the inspection so we appreciate your support and now the video thank you as a district we listen to our staff we listen to our students and our parents and we were able to expand support to an in terms of mental health counseling nurses custodians Judo coach has developed the hotline regarding covid questions that we go to the next life and I want to just acknowledge the Vic the great work for everyone coming together to make these things are possible thanks your input I thinks to the Education Foundation they're fantastic director and we are very successful with procuring Grant we have nicer one but also under doctor Dinkins is division who helped procure over $300,000 for culinary arts and so this morning yeah she catered by our students I just want to know if we can get them in a camera just move up a little bit over here to my last so these young students or have additional opportunities Hands-On experiences internships and be able to make themselves available so if you have any future catering needs just saying right here thank you so much and that's I miss when your  all the time when your shoes out or one of our fantastic new Duty hire teachers who's working over at Lynnwood High School Berkeley grad Cordon Bleu grad and is now here in Lynnwood making a difference I just going to the next slide I can't forget the issues that have come up nationally and internationally in regards to social justice as a district we're focused on supporting our students with academics but we want them to get good people like cider who hasn't even left high school and is already making a difference and social justice is critical for us and students didn't have to get to college to learn about Juneteenth so as a district we have brought together committees who helped us and has our curriculum so that children starting in preschool learning indigenous people that were here and are still here in Southern California so that we can learn about you and the other things that have happened in this country before they even leave our system in the year 2023 24 or 9th graders will begin taking in a through g f x studies course for all Linwood students in terms of internet access I want to take a moment to acknowledge and Senator Lena Gonzales she and I had a chance to speak about a year ago over a year ago regarding the importance of internet access Senator Gonzales has champ in and advocated for Broadband for all through her Senate bill for to ensure that such communities have access to the internet because he is not just for academic zoom in Google but it's now for DMV appointments medical appointment and it's a basic necessity that should not be denied to anyone and so thank you again support District we continue pushing it advocating for digital equity and the professional development for what I would also share with you today is that we have new Tools in our classrooms every teachers getting a new interactive flat panel we are providing the tools that they need to continue being successful because there's some things that we have to leave behind and there's some things that we also have to embrace understanding that our children have all been born with these devices and the engage has to be different and we also need to make sure that they're well-prepared when they get to college and post-secondary options one of the things that our board has committed to also doing is to updating our classroom furniture we think about that title Chris Pruitt and so with these things we want to make sure that our students and teachers have opportunities to have interactive conversations group work at that flexible seating is so critical to that as if we remain focused and committed on supporting students making sure that they we have more programs like the cow laps I miss fruit is a talented artist can I say that the skateboarder has out of town by the way and so in you already here that heard about side eye with a hurt her what she's planning on doing in Compton College in Long Beach City College are students Lynnwood have opportunities to take college courses for free so that when they get to the university if that's what they want to do they can maybe graduate in three years and save a lot of money as well as so that remains our why and so here is our Focus even through pandemic our staff I don't know how they did it ladies and gentlemen but they came together to support our students in person and our goal is for every student to apply to a university community college if they have an auction be on High School aeries who is eligible to complete a FAFSA and I don't know if you've completed a pastor recently but I got a first-year student in college right now and let me tell you it was a lot of work and I used to do them all in my own when I was a student and I was asking for like 11 years so but it's a lot and so I'm so grateful to our staff and our partnership through the gates and the carpet network with other school districts who are actresses and if you don't know this already unified has in that were in the top 10 in the state for the percentage of students who complete the FAFSA and against some people would say that that kind of be possible in Linwood but yes it possible I just you finalize my presentation congratulations to the 16 out of the 18 schools incredible who were recognized by the calendar for new Department of mission for their work in supporting and entering in the community with PBIS and special congratulations to Wilson Elementary who received the highest honor a platinum recognition as a district where one out of maybe like 15 districts in the country who have been invited to participate in the National Coalition rise up relation to address issues of disparity and inequities for black brown and Indigenous populations and show we are leading the nationally to Advocate and change public education so that it truly is serving all student congratulations to miss Gonzalez Lynnwood High School again recognized as top 10 School and thanks to our partnership with thing together we were recognized as one of the two districts and a nonprofit in California for our work and bring him back here to school this summer so congratulations to the Lynnwood Community on that and we are super excited about our partnership with Saint Anne's and the Los Angeles County Office of Education here's a picture of our groundbreaking back I don't know if it was in the spring and in a few months Lynwood unified thanks to our partnership with Saint Anne's will open up our its doors to prove play childcare 4023 and at the district that's incredible because he's going to provide more of our families options to return to school to have part-time jobs to have quality child care if you don't know child care is expensive and it also denies found me from going back to school and having other Edge in our employment opportunities so we're really excited about that and I believe we're also hiring was seen as applications are available go visit st. Ann's website follow them on social media or contact any of our schools for more information and these will open up at Lugo Elementary and a tavan Elementary in the coming months so we're very excited about that and I just can't say thank you enough thank you for your support thank you for joining us today in person we appreciate all of you and this is what it's all about our students The Smiling Faces even through those face masks and as the Mortar Board says it from one of our 21 graduates The Best Is Yet To Come thank you so much everyone thank you dr. cross wait for your leadership could I test you for the near The Cross Way for us to leave it as we go next you'll be hearing from a pre-recorded message from The Lynwood Partners Educational Foundation president Lori Williams at going to know if you want to chat I will not present a presentation rather than Lori Williams La Presidente The Lynwood Partners Educational Foundation good morning my name is Lori Williams and I'm honored to be the president of the Lynnwood partner Educational Foundation for 2nd year I am so sorry that I could not be there in person with you but I'm thankful for everyone who attended today in person you know it's really good we are students and staff back together and despite this another challenging year but today is about celebrating our students or staff and our Public Schools we all every Community benefit from public education to support our students in our school since 2015 Partners Educational Foundation has made a significant impact on our Linwood students this past year alone through the generous donation of Kaiser Permanente ECMC Foundation Lynnwood Rotary Club Southern California Edison Richard retamosa O & C D E Office Solutions and individual supporters able to Ward $30,000 in college scholarships to Lynwood unified graduating seniors who are attending some of the most prestigious and sought-after two and four-year colleges and universities we also awarded $9,000 in Grants to 22 Lynwood unified teachers to enrich learning environment and we plan to do dollars in Grants this year the teacher mini Grant application is currently available for teachers to apply through October 29th we deliver belcher's to close to 800 of our most vulnerable Lynnwood families and seniors in the community the vouchers used to purchase meals at local restaurants over the winter holiday provided to a cheers food security Grant from the California Community Foundation we also helped Lynwood unified received a $100,000 Grant from the couch fornia Community Foundation summer program for 1,400 students 1400 elementary and middle school students this past summer we provided 150 grocery cards to Linwood students and families during the height of the covid pandemic and we continue to support the young Lynwood unified food which has helped over 20,000 children and adults in the Lynnwood Community since the pandemic we received support from the Lynnwood Rotary Club and the rotary Foundation to help with food pantry cost we should all be proud of the work of the foundation and I'm here today to ask you to help continue to build a pond towards the future join us by supporting our Lynnwood gives event which starts today and runs through October 14th our goal is to raise $25,000 is to continue supporting our critical programs for our Lynnwood student Educators and school so why don't you give today by pulling out your phone and texting Lynnwood give to 44321 that's Lynnwood give to 44321 or by visiting our website at www.ge.com fundation. Like think Lynwood Unified District for just being a great district and school and helping us through this tough time as a district we learn first about the housing insecurity the food insecurity and we were able to partner with other organizations like Greater Emmanuel Temple Reformed Church of La Lynwood City the Sheriff's Department of course the LA Food Bank and we quickly opened up a food pantry that became available to our community every week when we learned about the lack of testing we reached out to our local elected officials our board members reached out to make sure that we had these much-needed resources here in the Lynnwood Community and I'm proud of the partnership with St John's Well Child and Family Center because back in March of last year we were able to bring vaccine Community we opened up a mental health hotline so that any family or student can call with any questions and we were able to refer them to the health agencies we also heard from the Lynnwood Community about the importance of having access technology by April of 2020 we had distributed nearly a thousand devices we also made sure that as a district we were always in line with the LA County Department of Public Health the state department of public and following all the protocols we are very grateful for the collaboration and trust that you have provided Us in serving more than 12,000 Linwood students I am extremely proud of all of our staff everything that they have done to support our language students families and each other something new for the student they learned a lot of technology I personally developed homework book where the students had everything in one place also the hyperdocs where I'm students were able to look at videos look on my lessons online just in case they miss the day they were able to go back and do homework without missing anything I have enjoyed very much that the school has been very clear and transparent with our Communications that it's wrong principle that we had videos of how the school to actually see him doing open house that has lots of pictures of all the teachers and the campus was that was really great I'm very happy with everything going on here at my way to unified student during the covid pandemic so we have resources that have help them to become an encouragement even to others so our district has been very helpful as well with our students a lot of the times that students were named go to have a computer at home or didn't have the means to have a computer the district has provided laptop provided Chromebook provided hotspot so that they wouldn't have an excuse not to do your assignment also there were food bank for the students to come in to get food resources for their homes have a second home when I was first year as a senior everyone super nice already knew everything because the old high school I went to they were also there and knowing that I have people that I can count on it felt like a really safe place to be here ever since I was a kid as I said earlier and I started music when I was really small along with drawings getting surfing and all these other things that I love to do and whatever let's do I like to put my best community in Lynnwood Aurora Alaska it's on me and that I said we must Alice Amelia distrito column is my birthday on you want to take a moment to acknowledge all of our staff who have come together to make sure that we were able to successfully bring back all of our Lynnwood High School student to the Bullis campus thank you to the Lynwood unified to Beauty for entrusting us with your children and we're proud to make sure that they're coming to school everyday and getting the quality education that they deserve thank you
